A mid-19th century mantle clock in a Belgium slate case with a French striking movement, breakfront case with a flat top and arched pediment, incised gilt decoration and two reeded variegated marble columns to the front with applied brass ring lion handles to the sides, 6” black slate dial with gold incised Roman numerals and brass fleur di Lis hands, cast bezel with a flat bevelled glass and egg and dart decorated slip, dial inscribed “J Perry, Paris”, eight-day rack striking movement, striking the hours and half hours on a coiled gong. No pendulum or key. French clocks exported to England were frequently signed by the retailer rather than the actual maker, John Perry (&Son) are recorded as working in London 1839-57 (1863-81).

Single Fusee 8-day wall clock in a Mahogany case with a 17” Hexagonal wooden dial surround retailed by the 19th century Schwerer family of York clockmakers, dial inscribed “Schwerer, 38 Stonegate, York” drop dial case profusely inlaid with brass decoration and curved pendulum viewing lenticle, 12” painted dial with Roman numerals, minute track and finely pierced moon hands. The Schwerer Family of German clockmakers consisted of three brothers, Philip, Peter, and Mathew who came to York in 1834 and traded from both Stonegate and Petergate at various dates during the early to mid-19th century.

Large and imposing wall mounted clock in an oak case with a single train fusee movement, case mounted on an integral recessed corbel bracket with a break arch deep moulded pediment and corresponding moulding to the front of the case, with glazed side doors and inner dial bezel lock, 14” two-part silvered dial with Arabic numerals, minute track and inner quarter-hour track, pierced steel hands within a cast brass bezel and flat bevelled glass, dial inscribed “William Crow, Stratford, A.D.1899” with a well finished 19th century eight-day fusee movement with plain pillars, fusee chain and fusee stop work. With pendulum. William Crow is recorded as working in the late 19th century as a clock retailer, watchmaker, optician and Jeweller from various London premises including 140 The Grove and 29 West Ham Lane, Stratford, London. Given the size of the case and construction it is possible the clock was commissioned and constructed for use in a large institutional or public building.

A carved oak ”Royal Polytechnic Barometer” manufactured by Joseph Davis & Co, London, c1880, with a foliate carved gable pediment above a 9.5 inch glazed and silvered register inscribed “Royal Polytechnic Barometer”, with trade name “Joseph Davis & Co sole manufacturers Royal Polytechnic Institution, London” register delineated with two sets of scales titled “Set Yesterday” and “Set Today” with adjustable brass recording pointers adjusted via two setting buttons (missing) below the register, the rectangular glazed lower case provided with “Special Remarks” and weather predictions flanking the bulb cistern mercury tube above twin Fahrenheit and Centigrade mercury thermometers. Joseph Davis & Co are recorded as working from the Royal Polytechnic Institution, 6 Kensington Park Road, London,1871, They were granted the sole rights to produce the Royal Polytechnic Barometer in England which was based on the Admiral Fitzroy pattern of barometer with similar but more comprehensive observations.

With pendulum and two weights. Joseph Heppell Maughan is recorded as working in Gateshead (Co Durham) 1834-64.

Oak cased 30hr chain driven longcase clock by Edmund Sagar of Skipton c 1795, with a Swans neck pediment above a break arch hood door flanked by two turned columns with brass capitals, trunk with recessed quarter columns and a long concave topped door, on a rectangular plinth with raised panel, painted break arch dial with floral spandrels and rolling moon to the break arch, dial centre with two representations of birds of paradise and subsidiary calendar disc, with Roman numerals five minute Arabic’s and non-matching steel hands, dial pinned directly to a countwheel striking movement with recoil anchor escapement, striking the hours on a cast bell. With pendulum and weight. Edmund Sagar worked in several market towns in North Yorkshire before finally working in New Market Street, Skipton c1793-1805, he was succeeded by his nephew George Lee in 1806. 30hr clocks with painted moon dials are comparatively rare at this period, usually being found on more expensive 8-day clocks.

With weights and pendulum. The Ivison family were prolific family of Cumberland clockmakers recorded as working in Carlisle from 1760-1834, established by H Ivison in 1760 and succeeded by one son and two grandsons all called John, this clock was most probably made by John (II) 1790-1830.
