English School (Early 19th Century): Portrait of John Cattley (1785-1862), oil on canvas unsigned 51cm x 40cm Provenance: purchased from the Cattley sisters, spinsters from York and descendants of John Cattley, around 40 years ago. John Cattley was the son of Thomas Cattley III, a farmer who died in Stearsby in 1836. John moved to London and formed the import and export company Cattleys and Carr, with its headquarters on Moorgate Street. The family had strong links with Russia, with several living in St. Petersburg, and the company imported Russian tallow. Cattley married Frances Garrett in 1815 and together they had eight children, seven girls and one boy; John Garrett Cattley, the eldest, became a member of the board of his father's company. He died in Shabdon Park, Merstham, Surrey in 1862.
