The catalogue begins with a rich assortment of clocks and rugs including a late 18th century bracket clock by Thomas Foss, London (lot 7009) and an eye-catching Afghan rug from the Ersari region (lot 7031). An oak and mahogany 30hour longcase clock c1850 with a swans neck pediment, carved wooden patera and radiating carved boss, glazed break arch hood door flanked by two ring turned pillars, with a mahogany veneered trunk, stopped reeded corner pillars and a short wavy toped door in contrasting oak, trunk on a square plinth with a recessed panel and shaped feet, 13” break arch painted dial with Roman numerals, minute track and stamped brass “crown” hands within a gold border, matching painted cornflowers to the spandrels, break arch with a rural scene representing a farmer watering his horse, dial inscribed “Thwaites, Barnard Castle”, with a 30hr chain driven countwheel movement sounding the hours on a cast bell. Braham, Stretford Road", full length pendulum with a wooden rod and brass bob, with beat plate, brass cased weight, pulley and key. William T. Braham was a watchmaker and Jeweller working from 392 Stretford Road, Manchester c1870. As well as being a jeweller he was a keen follower of Spiritualism and manufactured and sold several spiritual communication devices from his premises in Manchester. Spiritualism , the belief of communication with the dead, was a highly popular belief and practised widely for a period in late Victorian and early Edwardian England and America.
