Provenance: deceased estate/house clearance in the Leeds/York area, located in a suitcase with broken glass - back opened and glass replaced prior to auction. With The Little Gallery, 5 Kensington Church Walk, London W8, who were active around 1971-1975 specialising in big name artists but the pictures were often sketches, untypical works, thumbnail drawings etc (far more readily available at this period). There are many other examples of big name artist's pictures being sold with the same Gallery label in the same handwriting. The back of the drawing is inscribed 'J Constable' probably in the handwriting of John Fisher, his friend and patron, who on Constable's death dispersed many sketches and scrapbooks. Notes: Constable made a series of drawings, mainly of shipping, during his voyage on the East Indiaman 'Coutts' from London to Deal in April 1803. In a letter to his good friend John Dunthorne, dated 23rd May 1803, he writes 'I came on shore at Deal, walked to Dover (about one and a half hours) and the next day returned to London', giving him a half day in Dover.
