Henry Redmore

Department Specialist

David Duggleby

Director & Fine Art Consultant

Despite being one of Britain’s greatest marine painters, relatively little is known of the life of Henry Redmore. He was born in 1820, probably in Hull, where he lived for most of his life. His output, however, was not limited by his fixed residence; he travelled up and down the East Coast, south to Devon and Cornwall, and probably to Holland. His style was greatly influenced by the Dutch marine painters, but he developed a style very much of his own, somewhat resembling that of his contemporary and likely teacher, John Ward of Hull (1798-1849). He worked almost exclusively with his agent, James Eyre Jackson, and only exhibited once in London, at the Royal Academy in 1868 – he later wrote that he found the experience “personally distasteful”. The Ferens Gallery in Hull holds the greatest collection of his work, and he is also represented in the Pannett Gallery, Whitby and Scarborough Art Gallery.
