At Dugglebys, we pride ourselves on recognising the extraordinary — and ensuring the right people see it. When a striking oil on canvas titled Don Quixote came to light during a routine valuation visit in Whitby, our team immediately knew it was something special.

Painted in 1961 by Júlio Pomar, one of Portugal’s most celebrated modern artists, the work had been quietly hanging at the top of a staircase for over three decades. Acquired for just £89 in Edinburgh in the late 1980s, it had gone largely unnoticed until it caught the trained eye of our Head of Art, Dominic Cox. While the vendor wasn’t particularly attached to the painting, Dominic saw clear potential and encouraged its consignment, initiating a process of in-depth research and careful preparation for sale.

Our team quickly confirmed that the painting was by Pomar, an artist whose career spanned expressive neo-realist works to powerful later abstracts, with pieces held in major institutions across Europe and South America. While Pomar commands strong prices in his homeland, his presence on the UK auction market is rare, a fact that added further weight to the importance of the find. Recognising this, we revised our estimate to £5,000–8,000 and set about ensuring the painting received the international attention it warranted.

The marketing campaign was both targeted and multifaceted, combining digital and print advertising with strategic press outreach. We promoted the painting through specialist publications and ensured it received prominent coverage in the trade press, including the Antiques Trade Gazette, where its story captured the imagination of readers and collectors alike. Online, the painting featured across our high-traffic catalogue platform, with our digital advertising focusing on overseas buyers - particularly in Portugal, where demand for Pomar remains strong.

The results were clear. By the time the catalogue launched, interest had already begun building, and as the sale approached, five phone lines were booked (three from Portugal, one from Austria and one from the UK), along with seven commission bids. On the day of the auction, bidding opened at £7,600 and quickly escalated into a heated contest between a Portuguese phone bidder, a private Portuguese buyer online, and a London-based interior designer. After a tense exchange, the hammer fell to the latter for a final price of £23,000 (plus buyer’s premium), the highest known UK result for the artist and a true benchmark moment.

The vendor, who had been watching quietly from the room, was so taken by the outcome that he stepped forward to shake Dominic’s hand mid-sale - a rare and memorable gesture. For us, it was a proud moment that reflected not only the power of great art but the value of deep expertise, diligent research, and a well-executed marketing strategy.

At Dugglebys, this is exactly what we do: we uncover potential, tell the right story and ensure the right buyers are paying attention. Whether it’s hanging on a staircase or tucked away in an attic, we believe every great piece deserves its moment - and we know exactly how to give it one.
