We were delighted to present a range of stunning artworks in our Summer Art Sale – a curated and diverse range of works that spanned three centuries of British, European and international art. From late Georgian studies to bold modernist compositions, the sale drew strong interest from collectors across the UK and beyond, with many works exceeding expectations and several achieving landmark results.

Among the undoubted stars of the sale was a floral still life attributed to Dame Ethel Walker DBE ARA. Mixed Bouquet, a richly worked oil on canvas with multiple exhibition labels verso, soared to £24,500 – establishing a new world auction record for the artist. This significant result reflects the increasing recognition of Walker’s contribution to early British modernism and the demand for her distinctive, expressive style.

Another notable floral study came in the form of James Bolivar Manson’s Sweet Sultans and Marigolds, almost certainly appearing in the artist’s 1945 Royal Academy exhibit. Realising £3,700, the painting attracted interest not only for its exhibition history but also for the distinctive blue-and-white jug depicted – the same vessel that appears in Manson’s 1940 Royal Academy work Tulips and Daffodils. This continuity of studio props helps firmly situate the painting within the artist’s Royal Academy period and adds to its art historical value.

British landscape painting was a particular strength of the sale. Herbert F. Royle performed exceptionally well, with The Bluebell Wood achieving £7,200 – the highest price for the artist at auction in over a decade – and Church in Winter following with £3,500. Both works captured the changing moods of the British countryside in Royle’s distinctive palette and poetic light. John Alfred Arnesby Brown’s Clouds Gathering Over a Pasture, meanwhile, drew enthusiastic bidding and achieved £3,900 – a strong result for a work of subtle atmosphere and lyrical brushwork.

Marine art and coastal subjects also saw excellent results. Ernest Dade’s Scarborough Fishing Cobble SH57, a watercolour of considerable scale and detail, achieved £4,100. Originally sold by Dugglebys in 2014 – when it set an auction record for the artist – the work remains one of Dade’s finest depictions of Yorkshire maritime life. Walter Goodin’s North Landing Flamborough, a vibrant oil capturing the chalk cliffs and clear skies of the East Riding coast, sold for £1,700.

The portrait section included a number of stand-out entries. Frederic Whiting’s Study for Portrait – King George V in Uniform on Horseback, an oil study with both historic and compositional interest, reached £2,300. Mark Lancelot Symons’ A Tiring Day in the Garden, a gently narrative domestic scene with undoubted charm, sold for £1,800 – a result that reflects growing appreciation for early 20th-century figurative works with distinctive character.

Elsewhere, strong prices were achieved for works with continental and social resonance. Joseph Beaume’s Young Girl by a Forest Spring, from a Driffield private collection, made £1,400. Irene Wyatt’s enigmatic Lady with a Green Earring – thought to depict Merula Salaman, the first wife of Sir Alec Guinness, and possibly exhibited at the New English Art Club in 1932 – achieved £1,100, its narrative intrigue adding to its visual appeal.

Beyond these leading lots, the sale featured a broad array of traditional and modern works, including paintings from the Staithes Group, Scottish colourists, and international artists from as far as Australia and South Africa. There was lively bidding throughout, both in the room and online, with the sale confirming the strength of the current market for well-sourced, well-presented art.

We were thrilled to see such a positive response to this summer’s offering and look forward to welcoming buyers and sellers to our Autumn Art Sale later this year.
