Duggleby’s invites entries for our upcoming Modern Living & Design Sale, a celebration of artistry, innovation and the beauty of great design. This specialist auction brings together an eclectic mix of 20th-century icons and contemporary creations – where fine craftsmanship meets forward-thinking style.

The success of our previous sale proved just how alive and well the spirit of modern design truly is. From mid-century classics to imaginative art pieces, collectors and enthusiasts alike were drawn to works that tell a story  pieces that capture the essence of how we live and create today.
Among the highlights was a beautifully preserved G-Plan Vintage “Agatha” sofa, unused and upholstered in the distinctive G insignia fabric. Its crisp, contemporary lines and matching footstool found a new home for £1,200, a fitting result for a piece that perfectly balances comfort and style. A Stouby Danish leather sofa, with its supple tan upholstery and confident simplicity, reached an impressive £1,800, underscoring the timeless appeal of Scandinavian design.

Craftsmanship met personality in a mid-century Lucian Ercolani for Ercol “Giraffe Model 363” bookcase room divider, an elegant blend of form and function that fetched £1,000. Similarly, a Mouseman oak coffee table, carved by the workshop of Robert Thompson in Kilburn, stood out for its octagonal adzed top and the whimsical mouse signature tucked into the grain  a hallmark of Yorkshire craftsmanship,  achieving £1,300.
The sale also celebrated the artistry of glass and sculpture. Two enchanting Oiva Toikka bird sculptures  a stylised penguin and kiwi, hand-blown in Finland  captured the imagination of collectors, selling together for £600. Doug Hyde’s “First Date,” a limited-edition bronze on granite plinth, offered a more contemporary kind of charm, finding its match at the same price.

Design, however, isn’t just about form, it’s about storytelling. That spirit was perfectly encapsulated in a rare Rowntree Mackintosh advertising prototype for Fruit Pastilles, a collage bursting with colour and nostalgia. Bearing the words “Only 3d a tube” and hailing from the personal collection of Rowntree’s own advertising manager, David Lamb, the poster resonated with York’s creative heritage and sold for £600.

Even the whimsical made its mark: Lorna Bailey’s limited-edition bookends, with their bold Art Deco-inspired colours and charming character, delighted bidders at £220  a reminder that modern design can be both serious art and pure joy.
