The Period Home Sale, ending Friday 9 October from 11AM, brings together an elegant selection of furniture, decorative objects and works of art chosen for their period character, craftsmanship and interior appeal. There is a strong emphasis on quality materials, decorative detail and timeless design, with objects chosen for their ability to sit naturally within both period properties and more layered contemporary interiors.
The furniture featured brings together refined period pieces and later revival designs, with rich timbers, decorative mounts and strong silhouettes throughout. A Regency inlaid mahogany and brass mounted library table, Lot 7517, is one of the standout furniture pieces. The rectangular top is inset with a gilt tooled burgundy leather writing surface, framed by crossbanding, boxwood stringing and roundel corner motifs. Twin reeded column supports, brass mounts and sabre legs give the table an elegant architectural quality, while six frieze drawers provide useful storage. Bearing an ivorine label for Spillman & Co. of St Martins Lane, London, it is estimated at £1,000 to £2,000.
Continental influence appears in a Baggio Anciens Meubles Italian Louis XV style bureau plat, estimated at £500 to £1,000. The shaped kingwood top is inset with a leather writing surface and edged with gilt metal, above three shaped drawers and cabriole supports decorated with rocaille mounts. Its curved profile and rich materials give it the kind of decorative presence associated with French-inspired interiors. A Colombo Mobili Italian Louis XV design bombé commode, estimated at £500 to £800, continues the theme. With a shaped marble top, parquetry veneered drawer fronts and gilt metal rocaille mounts, the chest has a distinctly sculptural quality. The bombé form and elaborate surface detail make it as much a decorative statement as a practical piece of furniture.
