Art, Print & Design
The art section leans into design culture, cinema and printmaking, with works that feel especially at home alongside the furniture and decorative pieces elsewhere in the sale.
A particularly interesting piece is the Memphis Milano in London promotional double-sided brochure, Lot 2011, signed by Ettore Sottsass and estimated at £100 to £200. Framed at nearly a metre high, it relates to the 1982 to 1983 Memphis exhibition held at The Boilerhouse Project within the Victoria and Albert Museum. The piece connects directly with one of the most influential design movements of the 1980s, making it as much a piece of design history as a decorative artwork.
Film collectors may be drawn to Lot 2000, a German poster for the 1968 crime thriller Bullitt starring Steve McQueen. Estimated at £100 to £200, the coloured print has the strong graphic quality associated with late 1960s cinema advertising and works just as well as a piece of interior art.
A different visual language appears in Hans-Joachim ‘Jockel’ Reisner’s Majestic Owl, Lot 2024, a coloured etching estimated at £50 to £100. Reisner’s background in engineering can be seen in the geometric precision of his printmaking, and this signed work combines that structured approach with a natural subject. He is also remembered for creating the Bradford City Fire Memorial in 1986.
