Lot Number : 6512

  • Wilfrid Gabriel de Glehn (British 1870-1951): The Belvedere Pavilion at Versailles, watercolour signed and dated 1930, 40cm x 49cm
Notes: The Belvedere Pavilion was built for Marie Antoinette by Richard Mique in 1781 in the gardens of the Petit Trianon.
The artist painted Versailles many times during 1918 when he worked at the Château, first as a censor, and later as a translator during the Paris Peace Conference. His sketches of the grounds and gardens formed the basis of his one-man exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in 1919. This view was painted on one of de Glehn's later visits to his former home.
