Notes: the Black Joke was a slave catcher part of the West Africa Squadron, after giving chase for 31 hours the ship caught up to the Spanish slaver El Almirante (a brig twice its size). A number of slaves may be seen in the aquatint, lining the gunwale - after the battle 466 slaves were freed.
