William Summerhayes of Taunton - 8-day mahogany longcase clock c1850, crested pediment with a ball and spire finial, wavy-edged break arch door flanked by rope twist pilasters and matching recessed pilasters to the trunk, with a short flat topped trunk door, square plinth with applied skirting, fully painted dial with Roman numerals and a rare depiction of an early steam train to the break arch, subsidiary calendar aperture and seconds dial with matching stamped brass hands, rack striking movement striking the hours on a bell. With pendulum and weights. Passenger Steam Trains were introduced in the 1820s and images were soon reproduced on many domestic artefacts of the period. Depictions on longcase clock dials however are seldom seen, as such this is a good rare example.
