Notes: Hans Wedel was born in Frankfurt on 14th August 1885. He studied fine art with Professor W. A. Beer and Emil Gies at Staedlschen Kunstinstitut (Art Institute) and later studied under Professor Heinrich von Zuegel where he focused on animal subjects. He owned many of the animals he painted at his private animal sanctuary which included Polar and Brown Bears as well as Lions. He trained these animals for many well known circuses. Hans Wedel fled the Nazi regime and at one point went to hide in the Black Forest.
