Thomas Upjohn of Exeter - mid 18th century 8-day carved oak longcase c1770, with a flat topped pediment, break arch hood door and free standing turned pilasters, carved trunk with a carved break arch trunk door with scroll carving and a grotesque mask, on a short plinth with applied skirting, brass dial with cast spandrels and a slivered chapter ring, Roman numerals, five-minute arabics, minute track and matching steel hands, recessed seconds dial and square calendar aperture, matted dial centre and makers name engraved on a curved name plate, with a strike /silent feature to the break arch (hand missing), Rack striking movement with a recoil anchor escapement, striking the hours on a bell. Thomas Upjohn was a member of one of the most prolific families of Devonshire clockmakers during the 18th and 19th century. Thomas 1737-1783 worked in Exeter, London and Launceston before returning to Exeter 1768-83.
